Notifications

Apps can use notifications to provide timely and important information anytime, whether the device is locked or in use. For example, notifications can signal when a message has arrived, an event is about to occur, new data is available, or the status of something has changed.

Content guidelines

Push notifications shouldn't be the primary communication channel we have with our customers, as frequent interruptions may cause frustration. They are the most disruptive type of messaging and should therefore be used extremely sparingly and only communicate things that we believe are of the utmost importance or value to customers. Push notifications:

  • inform customers about events or actions in our app.
  • Are used sparingly and only when our message is time sensitive and highly targeted.
  • Use engaging content that has a high degree of relevance to whom they are being shown.
  • Are Succinct, actionable and immediately communicate their value to customers.

Structuring content

  • Do use the heading to provide the reason for the notification
  • Don’t make the heading longer than 40 characters
  • Do use the subheader to explain the action the user needs to take OR what they need to know about this thing
  • Do allow the user to link through to the appropriate place if they click through
